Back in the office from Utah and catching up with various emails etc… We didn’t have a lot of time in Salt Lake City, but we tried to make the best of it. In addition to checking out the Bingham Canyon Mine, our hotel was right across from Temple Square. We strolled over there after the conference concluded on Thursday and was able to check out the grounds and the inside of the Tabernacle. Would have liked to have spent more time exploring, but needed to grab some dinner and head to the airport.

UTOUG runs a great show, not only did I get to present 2 sessions on DataZing and BI Publisher, I learned a great deal from their all star cast of presenters.

Tom Kyte gave us his top 11 features in the Oracle 11gR2 Database. One of the features was Edition Based Redefinition. This feature allows you to run multiple versions of your application at the same. This allows you to test, run user acceptance, etc… the new application while everyone else is running the old application. It also reduces downtime as you can switch users to the new application on the fly. Cool stuff… now, if we can get all of our customers to all upgrade to 11gR2, we’ll get this in the codebase! :>

Steven Feuerstein also gave a great presentation on High Performance PL/SQL. I’ve been able to catch Steven at a lot of the conferences, I always learn some new things. The amount of material he has available is amazing. A couple things I’d like to check out are his Quest CodeGen Utility and Quest Error Manager. I think that we could benefit from both!

The post UTOUG Recap – 2 Full Days of Education first appeared on STR Software.

Well.. my adventures continue. I’m in slighty cold Salt Lake City for UTOUG this week. Much better than the 90 degree weather back in Virgina though! This is my first visit to Utah, I wish I had more time to explore. Upon landing we had some time to kill so we rented a car and drove out to a huge hole in the ground called Bingham Canyon Mine, a HUGE open pit copper mine. 3/4 of a mile deep and 2 3/4 miles wide! Was definitely pretty cool (well at least I thought so…). Apparently you can even see it from space.

Have had a great conference so far. Today was pretty much a ‘Tom Kyte‘ day as the poor guy had a 2 hour session this morning that led right into a hour long keynote address. 3 hours in a row! I’m impressed. Good material though, I enjoyed learning about what Tom considers to be the best features in the 11gR2 database.

In addition to exhibiting and checking out a few sessions, I gave a session on DataZing today that was well received, even got some new ideas for some good enhancements as well. Looking forward to getting back and getting started on some new features. Tomorrow, Ben and I will be co-presenting on BI-Publisher. We have a 2 hour session so we will be tag-teaming the presentation. Ben will take the first hour and present on BIP and EBS and I’ll take the 2nd and present on BIP Enterprise. It will be very educational.

If you’re here at UTOUG, stop by and say hello, would love to meet you. Oh yeah, Happy Cinco de Mayo!

The post Utah Oracle Users Group first appeared on STR Software.
