Hard to believe it’s been a year since the last time we were all together at Oracle Open World. Coming out of last year, the big EBS story was Oracle EBS 12.2, it finally reached general availability, yet all remained curious about the most intriguing functionality in years, online patching. Here is a quick blog post we wrote on online patching if you are interested.

Fast forward to the Spring of 2014, 12.2.1 was quickly followed by 12.2.2, 12.2.3, and most recently 12.2.4 (see Steven Chan’s blog post) was released with a refined look and feel, Linear Assets functionality for eAM and some mobile integrations.

Our customers are starting to adopt 12.2. To date we have a couple implementations of the latest version of AventX supporting the Online Patching functionality and a handful of more customers scheduled for upgrades in the coming the months.

Looking ahead two weeks, STR Software is looking forward to what OOW 2014 offers in learning more about the 12.2.X release, future product direction of EBS-eAM, new planned functionality with JDE, mobile, general technical interests, and some additional learning about the Internet of Things.

In the days leading up to OOW we will post a list of the sessions we are most excited about. In the meantime, if you plan to be at OOW let me know. Maybe we can catch-up and grab a bite to eat together.

The post Oracle Open World 2014 Edition first appeared on STR Software.

Another topic that has gotten some attention in a couple of the EBS specific BIP sessions I’ve attended this week regards the BIP Desktop RTF Template Builder plug-in for Word. In short, EBS uses an embedded version of BIP which does not get updated as much as the standardized BIP Enterprise. Because of this version difference, EBS users need to use an older version of the RTF Template builder (Patch 12395372) to ensure compatibility. This older version does NOT currently support Word 2010, a standard that a lot of companies are moving to and are now running into problems. One user reported that this caused a major disruption to their report development after their IT staff made the switch. They had to scramble to get a PC to setup with an older version of Office to make simple changes which was not an easy task as the company policy had been set.

Unfortunately, this post does not bring any good news on this topic. The only thing to report is that Oracle BIP Product Management appears to be VERY aware of the problem and stated that a solution is being worked on. Per the standard Oracle safe harbor notice, there is no timeline for this solution to be released. One that thing that would help, much like my previous report on the data template editor, is to log an enhancement. Be sure to let them know what version of Word 2010 you are running (32 or 64bit) as well.

Off to a keynote…

I’m out at Oracle Open World 2011 this week and started off Sunday with attending a number of SIGs and regional OAUG sessions. The EBS – BI Publisher SIG was essentially a Q&A session and there were quite a few people in attendance. From the Oracle BIP team, Nikolas Psomas and Klaus Fabian were there to help answer the audience’s questions.

A question that seemed to get a lot of attention regarded a tool for editing/creating Data Templates. If you’ve worked with Data Templates and created them from scratch or tried to edit seeded ones, you know that the syntax can be a bit difficult. It’s XML, while that’s a friendly language for computers to communicate with, the strictness of the syntax doesn’t make it the easiest for us humans to open up notepad and start typing it out. While the latest version of BIP Enterprise 11g includes a GUI data model editor, there currently is no GUI editor to create these templates for Oracle EBS.

Klaus and Nikolas from Oracle left the door open just a crack, mentioning that an editor or a version of the editor found in BIP-Enterprise might be made available to the EBS world at some point. They also mentioned that the best way to make this happen would be to get some names attached to the already existing enhancement for this functionality. So… I would suggest that if this is something that you are struggling with you take them up on their offer and get your company’s name associated with that enhancement (open an SR with BIP team). The more people that express an interest, the more likely that Oracle will act…

I thought Oracle Open World was whirlwind this year, then I arrived home… Wanted to thank those that took the time out of their packed schedules to come to my presentation on ‘The Many Faces of Oracle BI Publisher’. I was excited about the amount of attendees that came and I have received a number of questions since the show. I have uploaded my slides and associated paper (with more detail). You can find them at the links below.

The Many Faces of BI Publisher in Oracle EBS Presentation
The Many Faces of BI Publisher in Oracle EBS Paper

One of the questions that came through today was regarding more information on how to convert Oracle Reports to BI Publisher Data Templates and Oracle Reports. This functionality currently exists as a series of calls to various utilities and is 3 step process.

Step 1: Convert your 9i Oracle Report to XML using rwconverter:

rwconverter batch=yes source=<report to convert> dest=<output file> dtype=xmlfile overwrite=yes

Step 2: Create the Data Template using the BI Publisher DataTemplateGenerator API

java oracle.apps.xdo.rdfparser.DataTemplateGenerator <Path to XML File created in Step 1>

Step 3: Create the RTF Layout using the the BI Publisher RTFTemplateGenerator API

java oracle.apps.xdo.rdfparser.RTFTemplateGenerator <Path to XML File created in Step 1>

Now there are some caveats and your results may vary, but rather than just repeat the documentation verbatim, take a look at Appendix D in the Oracle BI Publisher Administration and Developer’s Guide for your version of Oracle EBS.

Once I get caught up at work, I’ll also update the presentation and the blog with other questions and suggestions that I have received.

Once again, thanks for attending and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me either through this blog or directly (See the About tab for contact info).

The post OOW 2010 – Presentation 1 – Many Faces of BI Publisher first appeared on STR Software.

I was out of the office last week on vacation so I’ve spent the majority of this week getting ready for Oracle Open World 2010. Looks like it’s going to be busy as ever! Hmmmm… Looking at my schedule there’s not much time to grab a bite to eat… that could be trouble…

I have 3 presentations that I will be giving, if you haven’t finalized your schedule yet, would love to see you there:

1. Monday – 2:00p Moscone West L2, Room 2014 – Mohan Dutt at VeriSign was kind enough to ask me to co-present with him on his presentation regarding Best Implementation Practices with Oracle BI Publisher (S319049). We have some good tips lined up!

2. Tuesday – 12:30p Moscone West L2, Room 2011 – Many Faces of Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher in Oracle E-Business Suite (S319051)- I will be discussing what the Application Technology Group has created as the ‘standard’ in Oracle E-Business Suite as well as some deviations from this standard by different applications such as Collections, Payables and Procurement. This is a presentation packed with information. I hope you can attend – Bring your lunch!

Join STR Software at Oracle Open World 2010! Brent Lowe, Manager of Product Development, will present two unique sessions this year and will be accompanied by STR Software’s President, Ben Bruno. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk about all of your document delivery automation needs. Can’t make it to OOW this year? Keep up with the events via STR Software’s blog.

Session Info:

Title: Many Faces of BI Publisher in Oracle E-Business Suite
Session ID#: S319051
Date: Tuesday, September 21, 2010
Time: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Venue: Moscone West L2
Room: Rm 2011

This session focuses on the many different implementations of Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher within Oracle E-Business Suite by describing what functionality is currently available on a global level (all applications) as well as functionality within specific applications such as Oracle Payables, Oracle Advanced Collections, and Oracle Purchasing. It also covers bursting, the role of configuration files, and out-of-the-box features and functionality. Oracle E-Business Suite product teams have steadily adopted this advanced reporting technology in their specific applications. Unfortunately, not all of the teams have implemented Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher the same way within their modules.

Title: Data Exchange Between Oracle E-Business Suite and Other Systems: The Easy Way
Session ID#: S319050
Track: Application Integration Architecture
Date: Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Time: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Venue: Moscone West L3
Room: Rm 3006

This session investigates the use of an integrated tool that affords Oracle E-Business Suite users the ability to create, configure, and manage automated event-driven processes (FTP file, e-mail file, submit request) between Oracle E-Business Suite and third-party systems. Creating a link between Oracle E-Business Suite and other systems to process events is always going to be a challenge for IT departments. Unfortunately, achieving an acceptable level of integration between systems comes with a high price: custom code requiring maintenance; costly delays due to limited access to specialized IT resources; and bulky, expensive software.

The post Oracle Open World 2010 – STR Software Presents Two Sessions in San Francisco first appeared on STR Software.

So I’ve found that the majority of my posts have involved something to do with BI Publisher. Hopefully I’m not boring you to death!

If you’re interested in learning more, I’ve submitted a number of papers for the Oracle Mix “Suggest A Session” contest. Even if you’re not interested in the particular topics I have to talk about, take a look at the others, who knows… someone may be speaking about the exact issues you are facing!

Simply login to Oracle Mix and click on the ‘Suggest-a-Session’ link in the yellow box in the top left corner. Remember to vote at least 3 times for your vote to count (read the FAQ for more detail).

The sessions that I’ve submitted are:

The Many Faces of BI Publisher in E-Business Suite

Data Exchange Between Oracle EBS and Other Systems – The Easy Way

Introduction to Report Generation, Bursting and Delivery with BI Publisher Enterprise

Additionally, Ben Bruno, President of STR Software has also submitted a couple papers. They are below:

Moving to BI Publisher, Now What? Automated Document Delivery from Oracle EBS

Print Documents and Their Attachments from Oracle EBS

Also, if there’s something else you’d like to hear/learn about regarding the topics on my blog, let me know in the comments, perhaps I can put something together and get it on Mix for people start voting on.

The post Oracle Open World 2010 Papers – Vote for them on Oracle Mix! first appeared on STR Software.
