Fax Documents from SAP® ERP via Hardware-Free Delivery Channel

The Company

Headquartered in Madrid, Spain, Xstrata Zinc is one of the world’s largest miners and producers of zinc. Xstrata Zinc, with operations that span Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain and The United Kingdom, is one of the commodity business units within the major global diversified mining group, Xstrata PLC.   Xstrata Zinc had an eye on improving productivity and increasing efficiency when additional sites were added to the organization and the burden to the existing process was apparent.

The Problem

For nearly 10 years, Xstrata Zinc used RightFax to deliver purchase order output from SAP® ERP.  With the integration of Xstrata Zinc’s North American sites into the European Xstrata Zinc organization in 2009, monthly fax volume increased from 500 to 4,000 faxes. They sought to replace their hardware-based fax server solution and its mounting maintenance cost, with a managed/hardware free, automated solution to meet their new document delivery challenges. Reliability and North American support were key business requirements in the evaluation and selection of available solutions.

The Solution

Carlos Caro Martin-Vares, Xstrata Zinc’s IT General Manager, began researching certified fax solutions for SAP.  He quickly decided to take advantage of STR Software’s free pilot offer of the AventX Connector for SAP ERP. Martin-Vares was pleased to see the pilot software installed in less than 2 hours by an STR Software engineer.  “Once I showed AventX to my SAP Administrator, we were ready to buy and use it. It was quick to install and easy to use!”

As required by Xstrata Zinc, STR Software’s integration with SAP provided the flexibility to use a hardware-free fax delivery channel.  In this model faxes are transmitted from SAP to AventX and ultimately delivered over a secure internet connection to the end recipient.  The result is that Xstrata Zinc is able to take advantage of an unlimited number of internet based fax lines and easily scale to the then 8X increase in fax volume created from joining the North American sites with the European Operations. .

Since going live with AventX Connector for SAP® ERP, Xstrata Zinc now delivers over 10,000 pages a month with accurate, real-time delivery status directly into SAP Office. “Delivery confirmation was critical for end users in order to instill confidence in the new system.” said Carlos Caro Martin-Vares.

Currently, STR Software is working with Xstrata Zinc on the migration of their SAP solution on UNIX R/S 6000 to Windows.  Xstrata Zinc will retain their investment in AventX software with a simple license transfer.

STR Software specializes in document delivery solutions for email, fax, and Internet fax. The AventX Product Suite integrates with internally-developed and host ERP applications including Oracle EBS, SAP, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, IFAS, EAS, and more in UNIX, Linux, MPE, and Windows environments.
